Our expert house renovation advice and inspiration will help you create your forever home

house remodels

Tidy trees and plantings were planted along the home's foundation. With a bland exterior, sparse landscaping, and a blank white garage door, this vacation home was easily forgettable. Its beautiful lakeside setting demanded something more eye-catching. After a stunning exterior home renovation, the house looks completely brand-new. Diagonal cedar siding in a dark finish gave the home a dated look.

Renovations

Each apartment received new flooring, as well as renovations to the kitchens and bathrooms. New patio doors were installed, the public restrooms were renovated and the parking lot was paved. Pergolas over the front door and garage add architectural interest, and carriage-style garage doors replace the generic ones to create a Craftsman look. New horizontal-bevel cedar siding spruces up the facade, and a new color scheme gives the exterior a much-needed pop of color.

Loft conversion stairs: a complete guide to a successful design

Consider your lifestyle, preferences, and future needs to guide your decision-making process. A final strategy to quiet down your living space without tearing stuff up is to add floor coverings. A thick rug can help block sound in both directions, and adding a rug pad with acoustic properties like this one from RugPadUSA can augment that effect.

After: Classic Home Exterior

Knocking down your home down may not be as costly as rebuilding, you can still shave dollars by doing some of the demolition yourself—as long as you proceed with care. Before cutting a big hole in the side of your house and rearranging the framing, consider less invasive—and less expensive—ways of capturing light. But another universal truth about home improvement is that every little thing adds up.

Contractors often end up gutting all the walls, repairing the foundation and structural damages, and replacing the subflooring. Completely remodeling a mobile home costs $10,000 to $30,000, depending on if it's a single wide or double wide. Individual projects cost $2,000 to $5,000 each, such as kitchen remodeling or roof replacement. Roof replacement costs $5,700 to $16,000 on average, depending on the roof size, pitch, and type of material. There are multiple choices available for the design, demolition, and construction of your project.

Step 7. Plan for problems

However, there are some updates most DIY enthusiasts can tackle, including updating flooring with laminate or vinyl or painting, to save some costs. If your house renovation plans include an addition, changing stairs, or knocking down a load-bearing wall, consult a local structural engineer. Structural engineers cost between $350 to $750 and can ensure your plans are safely and securely completed. Building a home addition costs $22,500 to $80,100 on average but can range anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000, with homeowners spending an average of $49,600.

house remodels

If local code allows, you may be able to support a small addition on posts and beams, as you would a deck, explains contractor Dennis Gavin, of Gavin Design-Build, in Media, Pennsylvania. If you’re doing your own project, slash your materials-delivery fees by picking up goods yourself. For about $400, you can purchase a nearly new single-axle utility trailer online, which you can tow behind your SUV. Find trailers for sale near you via eBay Motors, or try your local classifieds. When calculating your home renovation budget, organize projects by room, and build a specific budget around each. Updating appliances cost $2,500 to $10,000 for a whole house or between $200 to $2,000 each on average.

The dark storm doors were removed to reveal the warm wood tones of the double front doors. A clean front walk and a well-kept yard and garden add to the overall curb appeal. Here are 20 before and after exterior remodels that can inspire you when it comes to your own home. Tiny windows and a small, uninteresting entry left the homeowners of this 1950s ranch feeling trapped in the past. See what you can learn from this extreme makeover that left their home looking completely different.

This house has several features that do not fit together, including the oddly shaped dormer, a filigreed portico, and a massive limestone chimney. The first thing you see on the exterior of this house is the white, evenly spaced columns, which make it appear caged. The second story on this house is sagging because of a rotted garage header. The overgrown front yard and general run-down condition of the exterior make this a house in dire need of a makeover.

A front-facing gable partially encloses the chimney and bisects new windows. Other details include shutters, battens and dentil wood trim, and a cottage-style door that mimics the second-floor windows. A gabled portico, new dormer, and louvered vent details in the main gable peak balance the facade and add cottage charm. The house and foundation are united with the same paint color and complemented by the new front door and a carriage-style garage door. The first order of business was restoring the stone-clad entry gable, a hallmark of Tudor style. Framed by a stone arch, the heavy wood doors complete a curve when closed.

"We want them to be comfortable here, so that’s kinda like a real cool thing. Our personalities actually are a part of this house now." Brock, who has been documenting his many home projects on social media, noted that he's embracing "the true sprit of DIY" in the new abode. Noise from building work on a £15 million house owned by former West Bromwich Albion chairman Jeremy Peace was the cause of three horses from the household cavalry bolting in central London. "Over the next two years, we're putting everything we have into the home and living the frugal lifestyle," Phipps says.

The overall appearance was weighed down by the two carports topped by a screen porch. The porch's screens, which blocked sunlight from entering the home, reiterated the boxy shape of the space below, creating an unappealing stacked effect. This small 1940s Cape Cod was almost overtaken by shrubs that crowded the home and encroached the front steps. After this exterior home remodel, this home went from boring to beautiful. Cost data is based on actual project costs as reported by 10,317 HomeAdvisor members.

This large Colonial previously showed off the boxy, symmetrical features typical of the style. However, a faded paint job and lackluster entryway made the home look dated rather than classic. An exterior renovation added a portico and front porch to give the facade new prominence and timeless style. Removing the solarium makes room for a pretty porch with custom-built columns that improved the entry's function and provide the curb appeal this lakeside home needed. Repeating the sophisticated style of the front entry, a new second-story porch to the left extends the home's gracious exterior details.

7-Day Western Caribbean Cruise from Galveston

Sprinkle in a few museums, amusement parks, attractive beaches and tasty seafood restaurants, and you’ve got a great start to your cruise from Galveston. Regal Princess is based in Galveston on a seasonal basis from November to March. It operates some of the longest sailings from the Texas port, including 10- and 11-night trips to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Belize and Mexico. They're the sort of sailings that generally appeal to a retired crowd because these trips require a long time away from home. Based in Galveston year-round, the 11-year-old vessel operates short four- and five-night voyages to the Western Caribbean that are often on sale for under $500 per person or less. For off-peak travel, we sometimes see five-night sailings for sale for around $300 per person — or just $60 a night.

If it's swanky digs you're after (and you have the money to spend), you'll find plenty of options on this ship. One of three ships in the line's Dream class that date to the late 2000s and early 2010s, the 3,690-passenger Carnival Breeze is no longer the newest or snazziest ship in the Carnival fleet. At around 130,000 tons, it's about 29% smaller than Carnival's newer Excel-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. Like all Disney ships, Disney Magic boasts many cabins with split bathrooms — a boon for families.

Best for retirees: Regal Princess

Whether you’re a sunseeker or a fan of cooler climes, this guide will assist you in understanding the best time to embark on your Western Caribbean cruise adventure. Unlike the other major cruise ships that sail out of Galveston each year — operated by family-focused Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and Disney — Regal Princess wasn't built with families in mind as the core customer. As is the case with all Princess ships, it's more of a ship geared toward middle-aged and older travelers without kids, including lots of retirees.

Amazing experiences coming soon.

For the most part, the top decks of Regal Princess only offer pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for Princess ships. As a result, it draws far fewer families than the vessels above and caters more to an older crowd of mostly couples. Notably, the 3,600-passenger Regal Princess lacks nearly all the gee-whiz attractions for families found on the other ships that sail out of Galveston.

CHEERS! Beverage Program Q&As Carnival Cruise Line

carnival cruise beverage package prices

Carnival’s policy mandates that if one adult purchases the drinks package, all adults sharing the stateroom must purchase the same package. The savings add up to more than $50 over a week-long cruise. When deciding whether or not to purchase the drink package, it is a good idea to calculate how much you would be spending if you bought the individual drinks rather than the package. It’s worth mentioning that Carnival Cruise Line may continue to evaluate and adjust the pricing of the Cheers!

Is gratuity included in the price?

Different brands of vodka, tequila, whiskey, gin, rum, liqueur, brandy, cognac, scotch, bourbon, and more are available. Specialty cocktails start at $10.50, and most cocktails range from $10.50 to $13. Guests can also request top-shelf liquor for an additional cost.

carnival cruise beverage package prices

Can I get a refund if I change my mind about the drink package?

Carnival mandates that every adult sharing a cabin must purchase the same drink package to prevent sharing. If one adult in the stateroom cannot drink for medical or religious reasons, you can call Carnival and ask for an exemption. Exemptions aren’t guaranteed, but we have met passengers who didn’t have to purchase the drink package for their travel companion. The only exemption to this policy is for Carnival cruises that depart from New York or Texas when you aren’t allowed to use the drink package on the first day of the cruise. Sailings departing from Texas and New York have the drink package activated at 6 am on the second day of the cruise. So, while the drink package might be worth it for you, you’ll need to consider the drinking habits of your travel companions.

Get the drink package if you want to step outside of your comfort zone

Of course, if you are not a big drinker, you may not get your money's worth. Maybe you would rather splurge on some once-in-a-lifetime shore excursions or a nicer stateroom. Drink package in hand, I ordered a second pint of ThirstyFrog in the Atrium Bar while listening to the strings trio play classical hits. Seeing the bill print out with a balance of $0.00 was a bit of a rush I wasn’t expecting. I’ve been on luxury cruises where the alcohol is included, but this is Carnival!

Otherwise, on port days, you'll need to get your drinks in at breakfast, dinner and late-night bar-hopping. The Cheers Program also entitles cruisers to a 25% discount off of any drink costing more than the $20 allotment, wine and champagne by the bottle, and beverage seminars and classes. Bottles of wine and champagne are not included in the drink package.

The RedFrog Pub is the Caribbean-themed indoor bar that’s located on the lower level of many Carnival ships. It’s different than the RedFrog Rum Bar which is found in the Lido Pool Deck Area. You can find it on the Breeze, Freedom, Legend, Magic, Miracle, Pride, Radiance, Splendor, Spirit, Sunshine, Sunrise, and Valor. The Havana Bar is a Cuban-themed bar located on Carnival Celebration, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Vista.

How will the bartender know I have purchased the CHEERS! package?

Beverage package is arguably the most comprehensive package you’ll find on mainstream cruises. There are hardly any restrictions on what drinks you can get, and the maximum price per drink is a generous $20—higher than many other cruise lines. Beverage Package is the cruise line’s “all-inclusive package,” offering a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages for one flat price.

What Drinks Can You Bring on a Carnival Cruise?

Others do not see the point in drinking that much and would rather allocate the funds to other incidentals. Since it does not matter when you get it, you have more time to debate whether or not this is something you want to splurge on. Plus, you can spend the money on other pre-cruise preparations, such as flights and securing the shore excursion that you really want to do.

Ultimately, you need to know your own habits to determine if the drink packages on Carnival will be a good value during your cruise. Below are the average costs of the different beverages within each category. Using this chart, you can do the quick math to see if you would routinely hit the daily drink costs of the above packages. There are a few basic things you need to know about the drink packages on Carnival before we dive into the details of each option. So, in this Complete Guide to Drink Packages on Carnival, we detail all the plans, drink prices, and FAQs to help you decide if a Carnival drink package is right for your next cruise. If a cruise ship employee catches you sharing the drink package with other passengers, the cruise line will cancel your package without a refund.

For starters, if you pay before you leave on your cruise, you’ll save 10% off the cost of the CHEERS! You can get free drinks in the onboard cruise ship casino when you collect 1500 points while playing. After collecting the required points, you’ll receive a “Drink On Us” card, which allows you to get free drinks while playing. But, if you want to drink it at a bar or restaurant, Carnival charges a corkage fee of $15 per bottle.

Other considerations include the length of the cruise and how many ports of call are on the itinerary. If you would like to know what it’s like on a Carnival Cruise Ship, please read my full Carnival Pride review from our 9 day Norwegian Fjords trip. I do however have a link to the Red Frog Rum Bar Drinks menu. They had a great rotation of comedy acts during our 9 day cruise.

So, if you’re looking for a worry-free and all-inclusive drink experience on your Carnival Cruise, the Cheers! With its extensive offerings and cost-saving benefits, it’s the ultimate way to quench your thirst and elevate your vacation to new heights. The bar still has a nice sports bar feel to it and that was reflected in the range of drinks available.

Yes, even with the beverage program, you’ll pay taxes if in US and the fee will go onto your Sail & Sign card. To activate a pre-purchased Cheers drink package, go to the Casino Bar when you get on board. Otherwise, you can purchase the package at various bar locations on the ship. The bartender will give you a sticker to place on your Sail & Sign card so servers and bartenders know you have the package. If one person in your cabin purchases the Cheers package, every adult age 21 or over in the same room must also do so.

Although I am a fan of drink packages, I would skip one while in Alaska onboard Quantum of the Seas, as it is a port-intensive cruise. I'd rather save my money for once-in-a-lifetime shore excursions. Of course, if you take advantage of the non-alcoholic options, your breakeven point will be even less. Those who enjoy specialty coffees, for instance, will enjoy starting each morning with a handcrafted latte. Virgin Voyages strives to offer drinks for every budget so a la carte purchases won't have a great deal of sticker shock. Those purchasing a prepaid Bar Tab won't save money on individual beverages, though Virgin often offers a promotional onboard credit as a thank you to those selecting a Bar Tab.

Bottled water is available for $1.50 per bottle or $9.95 for a 12-pack. Other options include Gatorade, Muscle Milk protein shakes, Starbucks iced coffee, Naked juices, specialty coffees, teas, and fresh juices at additional costs. Combining these two is the Premium Soft Drinks Option offering a range of soft drinks, juices, small bottled waters, nonalcoholic cocktails and specialty hot drinks.

With the exception of the smaller vessels, each ship has lounges for happy hours, as well as post-dinner lectures and programs.

A Note about Your Travel Days

If your dream itinerary includes Seattle, this definitely makes how to choose an Alaska cruise easier as there are fewer overall options. In the summer, small ships are busy exploring up in Alaska. But each spring you’ll find them repositioning from Seattle to Alaska, and each fall they return from Alaska to Seattle. Southcentral Alaska’s terrain ranges from volcanic landscapes in Katmai National Park, home to an impressive population of brown bears, to the windswept Aleutian Islands that make a 1,000-mile sweep toward Asia. In between lies a massive bay of blue ice, which can be experienced on a Prince William Sound glacier cruise. The length of your travel window can also help you figure out how to choose the best small ship Alaska cruise.
